    Frequently Asked Questions:

    What is applied anthropology?

Applied anthropology uses theories, methods and perspectives of anthropology to identify, assess and solve social problems. At its base, anthropology is the study of humans and anthropologists utilize qualitative research methods such as participant observation, interviews, and focus groups to place social issues in context; the "lived experience" of individuals and their relation to their community is a major concern of anthropological research.

    How can it help us?

Applied anthropology is a social service aimed at positively impacting social, economic and technological problems. Depending upon your goals, different theories and research methodologies are utilized to evaluate your programs and assess their impact. Tools include: participant observation; structured, unstructured and semi-structured interviews; in-depth interviews (IDI); focus groups; surveys; social media; and mapping. Better understanding stakeholders' needs, improves client services, streamlines programs and potentially positions you for more appropriate grant funding.
